Best robot lawn mower: comparison and buying guide 2026

Why a robot lawn mower (and why not a conventional mower)

A robot lawn mower works in your place, relatively quietly, and returns to its base on its own. It is the ultimate in comfort for a neat lawn without spending your weekends on it. On the other hand, it requires a little preparation (a boundary wire or a GPS beacon depending on the model) and it costs more than a conventional mower.

The right reflex before buying: define the area to mow, the slope and how complex the terrain is. These three criteria already rule out half the models.

The 3 criteria that (really) make the difference

1. The area to mow

Each robot is designed for a maximum area, in m². Choose a model whose capacity exceeds your actual area by about 20 to 30%: a robot running at its limit wears out faster and leaves uneven patches.

  • Up to 500 m²: entry-level models are enough.
  • 500 to 1,000 m²: the mid-range.
  • More than 1,000 m²: plan for a high-end model, or even two robots or multiple zones.

2. The slope

The maximum slope advertised (in %) is often optimistic. If your ground has a slope of more than 25%, aim for a model rated at 35–40%, and check the width of the wheels (wider = less slipping).

3. Boundary wire or wireless

  • With a boundary wire: the older approach, more tedious to install, but often cheaper and very reliable once laid.
  • Wireless (GPS / vision): almost instant installation, ideal for complex terrain, but more expensive.

Best value for money

For a garden of 400 to 800 m², mid-range models with a boundary wire offer the best balance of reliability and price. Look for a model with a lithium battery, easy cutting-height adjustment and anti-collision sensors.

Best wireless (GPS)

If you don't want to lay a cable, wireless robots with a GPS beacon are worth the extra cost: installation in a few minutes, automatic mapping and precise management of no-go zones.

Best on a small budget (small gardens)

For less than 200 m², a simple model is more than enough: there is no point paying for features you will never use. Check above all the quality of the blade and how easy it is to clean.

Buying guide: what to check before you pay

  1. Adjustable cutting height: check the range (often 20–60 mm) and how easy it is to adjust.
  2. Battery: lithium-ion is a must; the advertised run time should cover at least one complete mow.
  3. Sensors: anti-collision and lift sensors (child/pet safety).
  4. Connectivity: a mobile app is useful for scheduling, but not essential.
  5. Maintenance: easy access to the blade, spare parts available (blades, batteries).

FAQ

Is a robot lawn mower worth it for a small garden? Yes, if you hate mowing — but an entry-level model is enough. There is no need to overspend.

Do you really need a boundary wire? No: wireless GPS models do without, at the cost of a higher budget. It is the criterion that separates the two main families.

How long does a robot lawn mower last? With good maintenance (blade, battery), count on 5 to 8 years on average.

In short

A robot lawn mower is chosen first according to the area and slope of your ground, then according to your budget. Don't pay for GPS features if a simple boundary wire will do — and conversely, don't burden yourself with a cable if your ground is complex.
